come back to love - a strong gospel influence

Come Back To Love is a special project, a project that signifies the inaugural album of Stardust Factory. This album was released approx. 10 months after Wildflower. Although Come Back To Love did not quite match up to the artistic breakthrough achieved by the previous album, it did bring a few pleasant surprises to music lovers.

This album includes three tracks composed by Dick Lee: I Want You Back, Time On My Own, and Heartglow. However, this time we could hardly find a trace of fusion. All the tracks in this album represent many influential musical archetypes: dance, R&B, ballad and jazz. Even when a Chinese instrument like pipa was used to embellish Baby, It's You, the overall arrangement was still an all-out signature Euro-pop.

This album also came across as having a very strong gospel influence. Aside from the
spectacular choral arrangement in Heartglow and the mysterious Gregorian chant in Let Me Walk This Way With You, almost all the tracks convey some sort of psalm-like, "love thy neighbour as thyself" messages. Last but not least, Singaporean arranger Joshua Wan was well known for his jazz and gospel music, no wonder this album has a such a definitive spiritual touch.

Sandy Lam's vocal performance continued to progress in this album, showcasing a vast range of techniques and revealing an array of unprecedented subtleties. Most of the outdoor photos were shot on location in Canada (i.e., Montreal and Quebec City), and it was uncanny to see so many familiar places in this album. Without the participation of Kinson Chan, I am of the view that the art direction of this album is slightly less sophisticated than SL's previous ones.

All in all, this is a solid and well produced project, and the very last overt concept album released by SL.
